After 5 years of being in the Big Easy, Reggie Bush has now taken his talents to South Beach. This will be the second Heisman trophy winner that New Orleans has sent over to Miami. The last one (Ricky Williams) ended up rushing for over 1800 yards the season after he was traded.
Reggie is a winner. He’s been a winner at every level, High School, College, and the NFL. The most important thing Reggie did for the Saints was bring a winning attitude and SWAGGER. The city of New Orleans and the Saints franchise was hurting pretty bad after hurricane Katrina. They needed people with heart to step up. People bag on Reggie because of his USC days but how many of us really know the whole story? I know that he’s been nothing but an upstanding citizen and ambassador for New Orleans ever since he got there. Even his farewell tweet displays class, “I wish the New Orleans Saints the best of luck I will always be a fan! The team, coaches, and fans will be deeply missed!”
He’s an incredibly versatile player and he’s a match-up nightmare. The first time I ever felt the Saints were true contender in the league was when Reggie caught that 86-yard touchdown in the NFC championship against the Bears.
Lets be honest, before drafting Reggie the Saints weren’t that great. They had done a lot to get to the NFC Championship and obviously Sean Payton/Drew Brees had a lot to do with that but in the end, Reggie BROUGHT the ELECTRICITY. He was/is an intimidating force on and off the field.
Reggie left because he wanted to be the focal point of the offense. He still thinks he can make it to the Hall of Fame or become a pro-bowler at the RB position. It isn’t that I don’t think he’s a super-star athlete or that he won’t be able to accomplish great things. It’s just that NFL doesn’t have a position called, “Versatile” or “All-Purpose” back. That’s what Reggie is. He’s a lot like Roger Craig. I hope he can continue to improve.
He brought a lot of life to NOLA and he helped the city with all of his off-the-field. Reggie has had a team-first attitude since day 1. He wasn’t a long hold-out and he has been nothing but a team-player ever since. Sure he had a lot of injuries but he never made any excuses and he always worked really hard. He helped the Saints win a Super Bowl and it was always exciting to have him on the field. I felt like he could take it to the HOUSE at any given moment. Here is a photo that I took when I drove into New Orleans several months after Hurricane Katrina.
I know Reggie leaving really ruins my Madden game-plan but hey it was too good to be true. It may or may not have been a better move to stay in New Orleans….time will tell…but what I respect about Reggie is his confidence to take on a bigger role. Reggie believes he can be THE MAN and he went to Miami in order to be true to himself. I hope he does well in Miami (except when he plays the Saints). It will be interesting to see how much of his highlights were as a result of playing in Sean Payton’s system with Drew Bress and how much of it was his pure skill.
